Best Areas To Live For Students In Birmingham

Birmingham City University

Birmingham is the second largest student city in the country and its home to three large universities, The University of Birmingham, Birmingham City University and Aston University. These means the city is very much a thriving student haven. Whether you’re moving out of first-year halls or just trying to find a place to live, there are numerous areas that are popular with students of all three universities. Let’s check out the top areas for students to live in Birmingham!

University of Birmingham

Selly Oak

The most popular student area in the city for University of Birmingham students is Selly Oak and is the epitome of what university students would refer to as the ‘student hub’. The streets are lined with standard looking terraced housing used by students for house-sharing with friends and course-mates that they make during their first year. More recently the area has seen a rise in the number of quality purpose-built student accommodation with some lovely places including The Old Fire Station – a Resooma favourite. Living in Selly Oak you’ll never be far from your friends giving the area a buzz of exciting student life.

Amenity wise, you’ll have everything you need on your doorstep, with local shops, bars, restaurants and pubs operating a very student-orientated outlook – our favourite pub has to be the Bristol Pear. Rent prices in Selly Oak are some of the most affordable for students in Birmingham, making it ideal for those tight budgets that we all have during University.

Selly Oak is linked up well transport wise, with great bus routes along Bristol Road and you can rich the city centre in a matter of minutes. What’s more, University of Birmingham is only a short walk away, and it actually has its own railway station. It’s the only university in the country to have one!

City Centre

Although not as convenient for the University as Selly Oak, the city centre has its benefits of giving a thriving destination for Birmingham University students to live. Being right in the middle of town you have everything you need, right on your doorstep; bars, clubs, buzzing nightlife if you choose to stay in the city centre you’ll get a fantastic student experience – be warned though, not to have too good a time!

While it’s a great crack living in town, you’ll be faced with a higher rent price that other areas in the city but you will tend to get a better quality of accommodations, especially if you choose modern flats or one of the purpose built student accommodation.

Moseley

Also a favourite area to live for Birmingham University students, Moseley is a trendy and unique area with its awesome independent shops and pubs scattered around the neighbourhood. Despite being slightly further away from the University other areas, transport links to/from the area are very good and you’ll be at the university campus within 25 minutes if you go via bus. Rents are affordable and all important amenities are nearby!

Birmingham City University and Aston University

Digbeth, is ideally located for Birmingham City and Aston University students, the areas of and are true student havens. Located only a short distance from the bus station, and Moor Street station are great for students looking for a neighbourhood on the doorstep of the city centre. There are countless things to do with some great venues for the evenings, delicious places to grab a quick bite as well as some great pubs in the area. .

City Centre

So good, it needs to be named twice – Birmingham city centre is another great place for both universities, with transport links across Birmingham and beyond. While as we mentioned above the rents can tend to be a little more expensive, the location with its broad range of amenities and quality of student accommodation all make the centre a brilliant neighbourhood for students of Birmingham City University and Aston University.
